Uses and Types of Grinding Machines

The wide application and versatility of the grinding process have led to the designing of several types of grinding machines. The grinding machine is a kind of tool which is used for grinding work pieces.

Basically, it makes use of an abrasive wheel in the form of a cutting tool. The rough surface of the abrasive wheel shreds away small pieces of the work piece as needed. The grinding machine isalso called as a grinder.

The grinding machines are used to precisely finish and shape the given material with high surface quality and low surface roughness. It is basically a finishing operation which removes relatively small amounts of metal to produce products with high accuracy. But certain grinding applications also include swift elimination of high volumes of metal.

The grinder consists of a bed with a fixed guide to hold the work piece. It also has a power driven wheel which spins at a pre-determined speed. The grinder’s head can be installed to move across a fixed work piece or the work-piece can be moved while head stays in a stationary position. The position of the table or grind head can be controlled finely by using a handwheel or a computerized numeric controller.

The grinder generates large quantum of heat; therefore coolants are used to cool the work-piece to avoid overheating, maintaining of tolerance and prevention of accidents. In case of some high accuracy grinding machines like surface grinders and hydraulic cylindrical grinders, the completed process generates relatively little heat; coolants are not required because temperature is tolerable.

Grinders are used in electrical, engineering, automobiles and many other industries. The different kinds of grinders in the market are as follows:

  • Bench grinder :

It is operated manually and typically has two wheels of differing grain sizes, which are fixed on a work bench or a floor stand. This is to perform finishing and roughing operations. It is used mainly to shape tool bits and make or repair different tools.

  • Belt grinder

It includes a machining process to grind metals and other material, using the help of coated abrasives. Belt grinding is a versatile process which consists of several kinds of applications like finishing and stock removal.

  • Jig grinder

It is made use of to finish fixtures, dies and jigs. It grinds holes and can be used for complicated finishing work and surface grinding.

  • Gear grinder

It is used to remove the last few inches of material while you manufacture gears of high precision.

  • Cylindrical grinders

There are two types of such grinders. One has a centre while the other does not. A cylindrical grinding machinemay have several grinding wheels.  In this case, the work piece is rotated and fed via the wheels to form a cylinder. It is used extensively in the production of high precision objects like rods, tubes, bearings, bushings and many more.

  • Surface grinder

An efficient surface grinder may be operated manually or controlled via CNC. It has a head that is lowered while work piece moves back and forth, passing through the wheel on a table.

  • Tool and cutter grinder

This grinder and the D-bit grinder perform the function of drill bit grinders or other special operations of tool rooms.

These are some facts about uses and types of grinders.
